I know the United States is in a serious war, presently, in Afganistan
with
the Taliban. I know, also, of the former Soviet Union invading
Afganistan
in 1980 (my date may not be correct, but close)

How many wars were there in this country (Afganistan) before then?
Has the problems in that nation extended back hundreds of years?

Afghanistan has been giving outsiders trouble since Alexander the
Great marched through (or tried to) 2,200 years ago.

Hundreds?
Try thousands.
Afghanistan has been in conflict many times.
In and of itself it has no value other than a strategic location.
